DEMOCRATIC GOVERNANCE >> Women's Integration in Development

  WORKING TO END GENDER DISCRIMINATION

Project name: CEDAW Follow Up (Convention on the Elimination of All Kinds of Discrimination Against Women)

Budget: USD 30,000

Timeline: 2005

What's the situation?
While Turkey has a high participation of women in professions, granted the vote to women in the 1930s and is apparently the only Muslim country with equal rights of inheritance and divorce for men and women, it still faces significant gender inequalities in property ownership, literacy ratio, labour force participation, politicial representation and visibility. According to UNDPs recent National Human Development Reports, very significant gender disparities exist, especially in the less developed parts of the country (the southeast and eastern Anatolia). Moreover there are significant violations of women's human rights, such as honour killings, in these regions. Turkey's ratification of the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) in 1986 has helped to popularise gender sensitivity. Under CEDAW, signatory states are required to establish a national machinery for the promotion of gender equality.

What's our mission?
To promote women's empowerment and gender mainstreaming in Turkey

How are we doing this?
Together with our partner, UNDP is supporting members of Turkey's Grand National Assembly to advocate for CEDAW and to implement CEDAW in their day to day legislative work. Six members of parliament serve as CEDAW Champions.

Who are our partners?
Our partner in this project is Uçan Süpürge (http://www.ucansupurge.org) ("The Flying Broom"), a women's organization which aims to increase communication among women's initiatives and organizations, fostering networking among them at all levels and increasing public awareness of gender issues in general.

How will Turkey benefit?
Turkey's legislature will adopt gender equality as a principle underpinning all legislation. In the longterm, Turkey will benefit by achieving gender equality.
