Young
trainers came together to teach their peers how to use
computer

(December 15, 2005) - Microsoft Turkey,
in association with UNDP Turkey, Youth Association for Habitat and
Agenda 21 have developed a project in which youngsters who are knowledgeable
about computers will train their peers.
Microsoft Turkey, in association with UNDP Turkey,
and Youth Association for Habitat and Agenda 21 have developed a
training program to increase computer literacy. Young trainers,
which will be given advanced courses during the "Empowerment
of Youth for Improved e-Governance in Turkey" project, will
provide training for young people who are computer illerate. The
General Manager of Microsoft Turkey, Caglayan Arkan said that they
give great importance to the projects, which aim to increase computer
skills of the youth.
Caglayan Arkan stated, at the conference, which
was attended by the UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative
in Turkey, Jakob Simonsen and the President of Youth Association
for Habitat and Agenda 21, Sezai Hazýr as well, "Young
population of Turkey has a great potential for future. However the
potentials are meaningful only if they are used properly. As Microsoft,
we develop projects like "Cooperation in Education" to
increase computer skills of students and teachers. Now, in cooperation
with UNDP Turkey and Youth Association for Habitat and Agenda 21,
we give a new impetus to our efforts in order to increase computer
skills.
The project, supported by Microsoft Turkey and UNDP
Turkey, and implemented by Youth Association for Habitat and Agenda
21, has started in March 2005. It is based on a peer education model
where 40 voluntary trainers from different cities are educated to
provide training for young people.
The young trainers, understanding that urgent and
important steps need to be taken for the e-transformation of Turkey,
are trying to reach other youngsters, in order to enhance and build
their IT skills in the cities of Istanbul, Canakkale, Yalova, Cankiri,
Tokat, Antakya, Adana, Isparta, Elazig, Mus, Adiyaman, Batman, Diyarbakir,
Mardin, Siirt and Sirnak.
The young trainers will continue to train their
peers in their hometowns until January 2006 and by that time 2000
youngsters in total will have been educated. The project is aiming
to become a national project that would reach 100,000 young people
in three years time.
The young people who would like to be "voluntary
trainer" and give the basic computer training in their own
cities are encouraged to contact The Youth Association for Habitat
and Agenda 21.
