Meteorology
/ Oceanography network of excellence (MONOE)
Following the completion of the Self-Assessment
Exercise on Climate Change, II.phase was initiated through
UNDP Country Office in order to enable the project proposal
applications for TUBITAK Public Research & Development
Program that also ensured the continuation of the Climate
Change Country Programme of Turkey. These activities targeting
preliminary and mid-term outputs to Turkey's INC, was supervised
and financed solely by UNDP.
The total budget (used to enable submittal
of TUBITAK Project Proposals) : 25,000 USD by UNDP
Project name:
Meteorology/ Oceanography network of excellence (MONOE) pilot
project development of satellite and IN-SITU observation,
data assimilation, prediction, early warning and user services
Approved in : September 2005, Ankara,
Turkey
Budget: 1,500,000 YTL
Timeline: 4 years
Executing Public Agency: The Ministry
of Environment and Forestry - Generale Directorate of State
Meteorology Services.
Partners: METU, ITU, General Command
of Mapping
The scope of the Project
The implementation of integrated meteorological - oceanographic
observation and prediction systems, as basic tools of sustainable
environmental management, are aimed through long-term research
performed by academic units under the Government R&D program.
The Meteorology and Oceanography Network of Excellence MONOE
to be formed with this objective aims to design and develop
satellite / in-situ observation and forecast systems, validation
/ verification of the data and predictions, and the presentation
of some products to the end-user in the form of integrated
services.
Project Outputs
- to develop the technological basis of present-day climate research based on modern digital electronics / computing based satellite / in-situ observations, real-time data transmission and model based forecast systems,
- to develop research infrastructures in order to accumulate knowledge for national /regional climate predictions,
- to contribute to the determination of the basic climate variability of the country alongside with its region, its sensitivity and adaptation to climate change, in order to develop appropriate policies
Preparation of the Project Proposal initiated
by UNDP Country Office
The project is funded by Government of
Turkey under the umbrella of TUBITAK Public Research &
Development Program
