PRIVATE SECTOR PARTNERSHIP >> Establishing a Global Compact Network in Turkey

Establishing a Global Compact Network in Turkey: Strengthening the Implementation of UN Human Rights, Labour Standards, Environmental Sustainability, and Anti-Corruption through a Socially Responsible Private Sector

Name of project: Seed Funding: Establishing a Global Compact Network in Turkey

Budget: USD 25,000

Timeline: May 2005 - May 2006

What's the situation?
UNDP Turkey, together with local stakeholders, launched the Global Compact in Istanbul in 2002. To-date, about fifty Turkish small- & medium-sized companies have become signatories. However, no big or multinational companies make-up this network. Moreover, subsidiaries of foreign multinationals who are part of the Global Compact have few links with Turkish companies.

What's our mission?
UNDP Turkey aims to facilitate an active network of Global Compact companies in Turkey through which to exchange innovative strategies to implement the Global Compact's Ten Principles on Human Rights, Anti-Corruption, Labour and Environmental Standards. The network will build a platform upon which Turkish companies will advocate for socially responsible business practices both at the national and global levels.

How are we doing this?
UNDP will conduct a survey and advocate the Global Compact among three target groups towards increasing membership within these three groups and strengthening ties between them: i- SMEs; ii- big Turkish companies and multi-nationals; iii- subsidiaries of foreign multinationals in Turkey who have signed the Global Compact globally. UNDP will facilitate a series of round-tables and workshops to lay the basis of an active Global Compact Network in Turkey.

How will Turkey benefit?
By providing a practical guide on how to implement on good governance and corporate social responsibility through the Global Compact's Ten Principles incorporating UN Human Rights, Labour, Environmental, and Anti-Corruption Standards, the project works towards engaging the private sector in reaching the UN Millennium Development Goals.
