CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION POLICIES AND TURKEY CERTIFIED TRAINING PROGRAMME BEGINS
A Climate Change, Adaptation Policies and Turkey Certified Training Programme has been initiated in cooperation with the Middle East Technical University Earth System Sciences Institute and the United Nations Joint Programme on Enhancing the Capacity of Turkey to Adapt to Climate Change. The training programme will begin on 20 September 2010 and will be carried out at the METU Continuing Education Centre. More >>
TURKEY NOW HAS A CARBON REGISTER!
In an effort to increase combat against climate change, Turkey has embarked on a new initiative. With the newly established national carbon register, the country will now be able register carbon projects. The national register, regulated by the Communiqué on Procedures for Registration of Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Projects prepared by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and published in the Official Gazette dated 07 August 2010, now awaits the first carbon projects for registration. The communiqué aims at registering projects developed and executed for the Voluntary Carbon Markets for the purposes of reducing and containing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing sinks as part of the response to climate change. In effect since 2009, the “Capacity Building for Climate Change Management in Turkey” project, implemented in cooperation with the State Planning Organization (SPO), TUSIAD and United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has largely contributed to this important accomplishment of the by providing impetus to the efforts of the Ministry through stakeholder meetings and various activities in addition to expert support and capacity improvement. INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF YOUTH BEGINS
The International Year of Youth was launched on 12 August 2010 in the General Assembly Hall with an eclectic event of speeches, musical performances, videos and poetry. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was on hand with welcoming words to kick off the Year, which runs from 12 August 2010 to 11 August 2011 under the theme Dialogue and Mutual Understanding. The Year aims to promote the ideals of peace, respect for human rights and solidarity across generations, cultures, religions and civilizations. In a message issued on the occasion, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that “in a world in which different peoples and traditions are coming into closer, more frequent contact than ever before, it is crucial that young people learn how to listen intently, empathize with others, acknowledge divergent opinions, and be able to resolve conflicts.” More >>

SEYHAN ADAPTS TO CLIMATE CHANGE
A site visit to eight projects in the scope of Enhancing the Capacity of Turkey to Adapt to Climate Change UN Joint Programme on 8-10 July carried out by a by a delegation composed of UN Resident /UNDP Resident Representative Shahid Najam, representatives of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry’s Climate Department and representatives from the UN Joint Programme as well as the Small Grants Programme, signals that residents in the Seyhan River Basin are already running local climate change adaptation efforts with success. THE YOUTH WORK FOR E-TRANSFORMATION
Living in the southeastern city of Şırnak where terror, inequality and poverty is abound, 22 year old Sibel has given computer classes to over 50 people, most of whom are women during the past 3 years. As if being a woman in the southeast isn’t hard enough Sibel says, her biggest challenge as a volunteer computer instructor at the Şırnak General Directorate of Culture and Tourism is the lack of support from local authorities. KÜRE MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK IS NOW OPEN
One of the 311 Key Biodiversity Areas in Turkey, Küre Mountains National Park is now welcoming visitors. Completed within the framework of Enhancing Forest Protected Areas System in Turkey project which is supported by the Global Environment Fund (GEF), the visitor and information centers, entrance gate and walking paths were opened to the public on 2 July 2010. With these facilities, visitors and tourists will be able to experience Küre Mountains at first hand. More >>
