With this project, Turkey will draw-up its national road map to mitigate and adapt to climate change in Turkey as well as by extension contribute to global efforts to combat climate change. SEYFE DRYLAND BECOMES A LAKE |

Within the framework of the “Life Plus Youth Program” developed with the contributions of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and Coca-Cola Turkey, the project team of the “Seyfe Dryland Becomes a Lake” has organized the “Water, bucket by bucket” program to support the project to transform Seyfe back to its former wetland conditions. The project team, consisting of students from the Çanakkale 18 Mart University along with the participation of the local population and government officials, symbolically carried buckets of water to Seyfe to underline once again the problems experienced as a result of drought. During the course of the event, participants also distributed “Seyfe Wetland Workshop Memorandum” which underlines the reasons for the ecosystem changes experienced in the region, and the results and suggestions for their solution. | |

Georg Kell, Executive Director of the UN Global Compact Office said global crises are an opportunity to rethink and retool business practices and that UN-backed Principles for Responsible Investment will play a critical role in advocating long-term performance. The Forum was held on 9-10 June at the Sabancı Center in Istanbul, Turkey. Local network representatives, civil society, government and business leaders from all over the world attended the forum to share best practices in advancing the UN Global Compact principles during one of the worst financial crises of the century. The Dreams Academy Project was awarded the Golden Compass Award in the Non-governmental Organization (NGO) category by the Turkish Public Relations Association in the 8th Golden Compass Public Relations Competition. Speaking on the reception of the award, Vodafone Turkey Foundation’s chairman Rengin Onay underlined that being awarded Golden Compass was not only important for the foundation but also a great motivational factor for the socially and physically disabled youth. Onay continued: The Dreams Academy is a project where common dreams are realized. Living Up to Commitments, the recently published UNDP annual report, highlights UNDP’s achievements in 2008 in the areas of poverty reduction, democratic governance, crisis prevention and sustainable development. The 2009 report strongly advocates the international community to live up to its commitments even at times of burgeoning financial crisis where what is at stake for the millions in developing countries who had benefited from the strong growth of the past decade as well as the plight of the poor, who did not benefit from this global growth must be taken into account.
